This instrument is called a steel drum, or a pan drum. These drums were originally created by left over oil drums and other industrial equipment in Trinidad and Tobago in the late 1800s. Steel Drums are a good example of the African Diaspora which was the mass transfer of African People and culture from the transatlantic slave trade from Africa to the Americas and the Caribbean. This particular drum was created by a student from Trinidad in 1970.

African wrap dolls like this one are a common form of African folk art. The first ones to arrive in this country dates back to the first African slaves to come into this country. These dolls are made with materials such as wood/twigs, moss, scrap cloth, twine, bottles etc. They serve as either toys for children, or for superstitious ways to protect their families.
